I created Living ROI as a passion, to share my experiences and support others who want to live more authentic, joyful and fulfilling lives.
Dear Friends,
One of my goals for 2020 is to visit every one of the 87 State Parks in California. That does not include State Beaches, Monuments, Reserves, Recreation Areas, etc., which would raise the total to 270. I’m also including the nine National Parks in California while I’m at it. For the goal, I need to visit each park in 2020, even if I’ve been to it in previous years.
This goal gets me out into nature, seeing places I’ve never seen and on solo adventures as well as with family and friends! All activities I love. I call this a soul goal because its primary aim is to feed my soul.
This weekend I’m on a State Park road trip with my sister, Mairead, in Mendocino County. Besides seeing parks, we are spending time together, exploring this beautiful region, and even visiting some family.
I bought the California State Park pass and even ordered a map of California with all of the parks listed. Some parks are small and don’t require an entrance fee. When possible, I talk with a ranger at the park, go to the park store and nature center, get the park map and go on the signature hike, which may be a short educational trail or a longer hike through the most stunning nature in the park.
Just writing about this goal makes my heart sing! I love applying my determination and goal-orientation to something that feeds my soul.
Often, we can miss the beauty that is right under our noses. I’ve been a resident of California for more than 50 years and have only gone to a dozen or so of these parks. There are more than 10 State Parks within an hour’s drive of my house, many of which I have never visited (until this year).
This Soul Goal can fall into the “staycation” category. Here are some ideas for staycations in every state in the U.S. Of course, there are staycation opportunities in every country of the world.
Soul Goals can take many different forms, from reading books you love to doing a yoga challenge. Here are Thirty Goal Ideas to Nourish Your Mind, Body and Soul.
It’s not too late to pick a Soul Goal for 2020! I just identified mine a few weeks ago. I’d LOVE to hear your Soul Goal ideas and stories and will share them in a future newsletter.
In adventure, and off to the next park!

P.S. Fun fact: California has the most State Parks and the most National Parks of any State in the U.S.
